2018 NFL DRAFT Round 1 Instant Reax

1. Cleveland Browns - Baker Mayfield, QB - Oklahoma

The Browns reach for a good, not great, QB prospect when there were multiple better signal callers on the board. John Dorsey has immediately replaced Sashi Brown as the GM that knows better than everyone else.

2. New York Giants - Saquon Barkley, RB - Penn State

The Giants reached a fork in the road and chose the short-term get-rich-quick scheme with eyes on an immediate Super Bowl shot. Barkley will make a scary weapon in tandem with Odell Beckham and Evan Engram, but it could have been the future QB here.

3. New York Jets - Sam Darnold, QB - USC

The Jets’ dream scenario plays out and they finally land their franchise quarterback after years lost in the wilderness. Darnold is exactly what the organization needed, but they all have one hell of a mountain to climb.

4. Cleveland Browns - Denzel Ward, CB - Ohio State

Once again, Cleveland passes on a great prospect in favor of a very good one and decides to leave the ultimate tag team partner for Myles Garrett on the board. Ward becomes the first CB in the top 4 since Charles Woodson. He's a good player. He better become a monster.

5. Denver Broncos - Bradley Chubb, EDGE - NC State

I would be willing to wager that Chubb was the top player on Denver’s board and he fell right in their laps at #5, reminiscent of Leonard Williams’ fall to the Jets at #6 a couple of years ago. It’s a great pick to rejuvenate a sagging Broncos defense.

6. Indianapolis Colts - Quenton Nelson, G - Notre Dame

Many were convinced the Colts would abandon this pick after having traded down from three, but they did the right thing in adding the best QB protector in the draft and an immediate high impact starter.

7. Buffalo Bills (via trade) - Josh Allen, QB - Wyoming

My first real negative reaction came after this debacle. The Bills gave up precious 2nd round draft capital in the 53rd and 56th pick (they overpaid by one whole 2nd rounder according to the draft chart) to move up and take the 2nd best QB left on the board. Woof.

8. Chicago Bears - Roquan Smith, LB - Georgia

Roquan Smith is an outstanding immediate impact player who seems primed to add some personality to the Bears defense. They may have preferred Nelson but things worked out well here.

9. San Francisco 49ers - Mike McGlinchey, T - Notre Dame

I’m a big fan of this move from John Lynch as surprising as it was. With Reuben Foster likely returning to the team, defense was no longer a necessity with this pick and the Niners made the right high ceiling/high floor gamble on a piece to protect their new franchise QB.

10. Arizona Cardinals (via trade) - Josh Rosen, QB - UCLA

Winner winner, chicken dinner. The Cardinals secure their future QB and the oft-criticized UCLA passer whose passion has been questioned now comes with a built-in chip on his shoulder. Look out NFL.
